Col d´Agnel - from Château Queyras and Sampeyre

Starting point of this 66.5 mile long tour, via the Col d´Agnel (9002 ft) to Sampeyre (3274 ft) and back again is the divergence to Col d´Izoard, 1.2 miles before the village Château Queyras at approximately 4593 ft above sea level.

On an ascending road we ride the first few miles to the little village of Château Queyras and then come to an almost level stretch of road to Ville-Vieille (4495 ft).
Leaving the Guil Valley we follow the road left to Col d’Agnel.

We cross the mountain river Guil and via 3.7 miles of mostly 6 to 8% ascents on a scenic road we come to the mountain village of Molines-en-Queyras. Here, we turn to the left, cross the village and continue to follow the road D205. Firstly on a short 10 percent ascent and afterwards gently uphill through the wide grass-covered tributary valley towards Col d’Agnel.

At about 6600 ft in altitude and 2.5 miles further down the road, we reach Fontgillade, the last village before the pass.

Now, the road runs directly alongside the mountain stream to an escarpment. Here begins the final ascent through a magnificent high mountain landscape. Ascents from 8 to a little over 10% have to be overcome on these last winding miles before we reach the pass summit of the Col d´Agnel, 9003 ft above sea level.

At terrific speed, we now ride 5728 ft in altitude down hill to Sampeyre (3274 ft) our destination and starting point for our journey back via the Colle dell Agnello to Château Queyras.

The first 14 miles of our journey back to Chianale (5896 ft) we do on a slight upward slope - apart from a few steeper sections before and after Casteldelfino (4232 ft).
After Chianale begins the almost constantly very steep stretch of road.
With a distance of almost 5.75 miles to cover till we reach the pass, we have to overcome a difference in altitude of approximately 2950 ft, with ascents of between 9 and 14 %.

Finally, having arrived at the Colle dell Agnello at 9000 ft above sea level after many sweat-inducing miles we can now enjoy the beautiful mountain world on the long descent to Château Queyras, the starting point of this demanding tour.
