From Caprile via the Passo Giau and Falzarego Pass

The Starting point of this beautiful but nonetheless demanding and sweat-inducing 23 mile long tour up to Passo GIAU is the village of CAPRILE at 3356 ft above sea level.

At first we cycle on the road which leads through CAPRILE in south-easterly direction until we come to the junction for CORTINA.
Turning left, the many subsequent bends soon let us gain altitude.

Grandiose views into the “VAL PETTORINA“ with the MARMOLADA massif in the background, as well as those in the south of the CIVETTA-group and Mt. PELMO help us to overcome the first exertions.
After a few miles we turn right and arrive at the mountain villages of VILLAGRANDE (3750 ft) and COLLE SANTA UCIA (4390 ft) which are situated in a beautiful panoramic location.

Cycling downhill we reach the road to SELVA di CADORE.

We follow the road to Passo GIAU to the left. Many bends and climbs of up to 15% lie in front of us until we reach the tree line.

Having arrived above the tree line we can enjoy a breath taking view of the impressive rock massif of the AVERAU (8684 ft) and the neighbouring mountain peak of the PUNTA GALLINA (8261 ft) and RA. GUSELA (8517 ft).

On our remaining travels to Passo GIAU we can enjoy a wonderfully unobstructed view of this high alpine mountain landscape which allows us to forget all our efforts.

Having arrived at Passo GIAU, at 7326 ft above sea level, the road goes down at a terrific speed through several S-bends to the village of POCOL (5020 ft).

Turning left we ride some bends through the sparse forest up to the FALZAREGO-PASS. From here on we must ride at 2132 ft altitude to reach our destination.

This ascent is also used in the Dolomite marathon, the difference being that those cyclists already have 6 passes and 62 miles behind them.

Approximately 2.5 miles before the pass summit a low larch forest opens up and one can guess where the destination will be.
With an inclination of up to 8% it gets tough again before we reach the pass summit of the FALZAREGO at 6725 ft above sea level.
