From Gasteig via the Penser Joch into the Sarn Valley

 The Penser Joch is a mountain pass in the north of South Tyrol.

It connects the Sarn Valley near Bozen with Wipp Valley near Sterzing.

We start our 104 km (~ 65 miles) -long round trip at the village Gasteig and we drive first on the well-built road in the direction of Sterzing.

Shortly before Sterzing we turn right and keep on following the road which first flatly winds the 20km (12,5 miles) and 1.236 m (3708 ft) altitude difference, but becomes continuously steeper towards the Penser Joch 2.124 m (6372 ft) above sea level.

We can now enjoy a beautiful view on the following long descent through the Sarn Valley towards Bozen.

The return journey starts at the roundabout situated below the street from Ritten into the Sarn Valley.

After about 7 km (3 miles) on a narrow and slightly inclined road, we reach our main location, Sarnthein 966 m (~2900 ft). Its castle Reinegg is located at the right hand side but is, unfortunately, not open to the public.

The road continues to rising slightly while we drive alongside the Talfer Stream and after about 16 km (10 miles) we reach the small town Weissenbach. From here on to Pens, the roads begin to have a stronger incline.

Shortly after Pens, a sign with the altitude indication of 1500 m (~ 4500 ft) announces the most straining part of this return journey.

During the next 4 km (2,5 miles) the road becomes more and more steep towards the top until the Talfer Stream will be crossed in a hairpin-bend.

The road continuous to rise mercilessly on the steep slopes and hardly offers an opportunity to catch ones breath on the remaining miles to the pass.

We can now enjoy a beautiful view on the following descent towards Sterzing and our starting point, the village Gasteig.
