Product information "Monte Lucco Cycling Tour"
The distinctive double peak consists of the Große Laugen and the Kleine Laugen, which has a height of 7536 ft.
These two Laugen peaks are the remains of a volcano which was created 250 million years ago. The Laugen peak is primarily made of porphyry.
The Ulten Valley lies to the North of the Laugen peaks, the West of the Maraun Valley and the East of the 4980ft high Gampenpass, which connects the southern municipality of Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde-St. Felix with the Etsch Valley.
The starting point of this beautiful 52 mile long tour is Lana, a market town in South Tyrol/Italy, in the south of Meran, situated at 1017 ft above sea level.
First we cycle a little way through the popular tourist resort and afterwards via scenic and winding roads up into the Ulten Valley.
After 7 miles we reach St. Pankraz, the first village in the valley at 2415ft above sea level.
Shortly after we have passed the Pangrazer-Reservoir, we follow the road south into the Maraun Valley.
Here, a 6 mile long sweat-inducing ascent begins, up to the Hofmahdjoch at 5564ft above sea level.
The reward for this exertion awaits us in the form of a 14 mile long descent through picturesque mountain villages such as Rumo, Marcena, Preghena and Livo, up to the 1739ft high Santa-Giustina-Reservoir, accompanied by a beautiful view over the plateaus of the Nonsberg.
At this point, we have completed the first half of our beautiful tour.
Now we cycle 8 miles north, via the villages Cagno, Romallo and Brez, by way of moderate climbs, to Fondo.
Here we veer left and follow the signposts to the Gampenpass
Sankt Felix at 4150ft and Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde (Our Lady of the Forest) at 4436ft above sea level, a very popular place of pilgrimage in South Tyrol, are the nearest bigger villages before the Gampenpass, the second highest point of this tour at 4980 ft above sea level.
Now, after conquering 10525ft in altitude of this beautiful but nonetheless demanding tour, we can thoroughly enjoy the following descent to Lana.
