Valsunga-Tour - via the Barricata

The starting point of this 66.5 mile long tour is Levico Terme, a spa town in Valsugana (the Sugana Valley), the valley of the river Brenta, in the Italian province of Trentino, at 1706 ft above sea level.

On this tour, where 8796 feet in altitude have to be climbed, an amazing ascent to the Rifugio Barricata, the beautiful plateau of the Sette Comuni (seven comunes) and a terrific descent via the Kaiserjäger trail back to Levico Terme, situated at the lake of the same name, await us.

We begin our tour at the railway station and ride on the public road through the Val Sugana via the villages of Borgo (1293 ft),Ospedaletto (1168 ft) and Grigno to Selva (879 ft).

The sweat-inducing ascent starts here!

With ascents of up to 13 % this narrow, 7,5 mile long road, which is partly hewn into the rock, winds in 12 bends up to 3281 ft in altitude:

Finally having arrived at the top, the view opens onto the beautiful open and extensive alpine landscape. Shortly afterwards we pass the Rifugio Barricata at 4432 ft above sea level and we cross the border of the Trentino into the Venetia region.

The next stage is a 3.7 mile long gravel road which, due to its condition, can only be used by mountain bikers!

Finally back on a tarmacked road we cycle downhill to Asiago in the province of Vicenza at 3284 ft above sea level. This village is surrounded by mountains up to 7664 ft. tall. It is the centre of the Sette Comuni which are situated on the plateau above Vicenza and Bassano del Grappa.

Just after Asiago, the 13 mile long and relatively flat ascent to the Passo di Vezzena (4600 ft) begins.

The following descent on the narrow Kaiserjäger trail back to the starting point of this beautiful tour offers magnificent views over the Caldonazzosee.
