Appenzell - Cycling tour to the Rheineck

The picturesque village of Appenzell (770 m), at the foot of the impressive Alpstein with its highest mountain, the 8205ft high Säntis, situated in the Swiss Canton of Appenzell-Innerrhoden, is the starting point of this very beautiful but demanding tour.

On an approximately 46 mile long stretch of road with beautiful views of the smooth and colourful hilly landscape, 5830 ft in altitude have to be climbed.

Shortly after the start, we cycle the first 3.7 miles - quite relaxed - on an almost level stretch of road to the little village of Schlatt-Haslen (2448 ft). Here the road begins to ascend. Facing inclines in single digits, we cycle via Teufel (844 m) steadily upwards to Speicher (3002 ft).

Now follows an almost 2.5 mile long descent to Tobel (2215 ft) and the Goldach, a little river, which flows through the Chastenloch-Gorge and opens into Lake Constance 11.5 miles downriver.

After crossing the bridge, the way ahead leads us through many bends up to Eggersriet (2720 ft), a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen with approximately 2200 inhabitants.

On the following ride via Grub AR (2670 ft), a municipality in Vorderland in the canton Appenzell-Außerrhoden, down to Rorschacherberg (1535 ft), magnificent views are offered over the Rhein Valley with mountain ranges behind and over the Lake Constance.

Now a short, flat stretch of road follows north to Rheineck, before the steep and winding ascent via Walzenhausen (2198 ft), Wolfhalden (2329 ft) and Heiden (2608 ft) to Wald (3163 ft) begins.

The following descent to Trogen (2726 ft) is pure relaxation.

Pedalling hard again is the name of the game of the following 2 mile long and steep ascent to the highest point of this tour at 3474 ft above sea level.

Bühler and Gais are the last villages on the way back to Appenzell, the starting point of this beautiful tour.
