Around the Starnberger Lake

 The Starnberger Lake with an area of around 57 km² and a shore length of about 50 km is the largest lake in the “land of the 5 lakes”.

It is located about 25 km south of Munich in a beautiful landscape and offers a wonderful view of the Alps.

In the past many famous personalities knew of and appreciated the attractiveness of this landscape, such as the fairy tale king Ludwig II, empress Sissi and Richard Wagner. Many beautiful old and new mansions around the lake testify to the prosperity of former and current residents.

The Starnberger Lake and the surrounding moraine landscape were formed in the last ice age.

The west bank is dominated by the Andechser ridge of hills with the Machtlfinger hill country and the Ilka height at Tutzing. This bank is not as steep as the eastern part Münsinger ridge of hills.

The deepest point of the lake is 127m the same depth as the Seeburg at Allmannshausen. Only a few hundred meters from the east bank the lake bed goes vertically down for more than 100m

In the Starnberger lake there is the island of "Wörth" with an area of 2.56 ha better known as "Roseninsel" (Isle of Roses). Whenever the imperial cousin Elisabeth "Sissi" stayed at Possenhofen Castle, King Ludwig II met her here. Until his death both were intertwined by a deep soul friendship.

In 1970 the Free State of Bavaria bought the "Roseninsel" and made it public again.

Today the casino and the rose garden have been restored to almost their original condition.
