Pfaffenwinkel Cycling Tour

Pfaffenwinkel is the name for a region between the rivers Loisach and Lech in Southern Bavaria. The centre is the administrative district Weiheim-Schongau, which is characterized by a hilly landscape with meadows, forests, moors and lakes at a sea level between 1640 ft and 3281 ft.

The region was given the name due to the numerous pilgrimage churches, for example in Vilgertshofen, Hohenpeißenberg and not to forget the church Wieskirche, which is world renowned, as well as the monasteries in Ettal, Steingaden, Rottenbuch, Polling and Wessobrunn.

The starting point of this 93 mile long and with 6713 ft in altitude demanding but beautiful tour is Seeshaupt, situated on the southern bank of Lake Starnberg at 1969 ft above sea level. Fantastic views of the foothills of the Southern Bavarian Alps and its mountains will line our way.

First we cycle on a quite road gently uphill to Hohenberg with its famous castle restaurant and the castle of the same name, which belongs to the Family von Thurn und Taxis.

Via Eberfing and Obersöchering we then reach the northern bank of the Lake Staffel and shortly afterwards Uffing am Staffelsee.

We continue the tour through this hilly landscape via Schöffau and Böbing to Rottenbuch with its main place of interest, the Augustiner-Chorherrenstift (Augustinian monastery).

The next destination is the health resort Steingaden, on which municipal area the unique architectural monuments such as the Welfenmünster (Welfen church) with its rich history of art and the world renowned church Wieskirche are situated.

Using narrow and quiet side roads we now reach the Peiting market and then, after crossing the river Lech, the city Schongau in the administrative district Weilheim-Schongau.

Via Schwabsoien and Dienhausen we arrive at Denklingen in the administrative district Landsberg am Lech. Here we turn off, ride downhill to Epfach and then, after crossing the Lech, we cycle steeply uphill to Reichling.

The way ahead leads us via the villages Rott, Dettenschwang and Dettenhofen to Dießen am Ammersee.

Raisting - known for its earth station and the parabolic reflectors, which can be seen from a distance - Pähl, Diemendorf and Bauerbach are the next villages we pass through on the way to Bernried am Starnberger See.

Now, only a few miles are left until we reach Seeshaupt at the Lake Starnberg, the starting point of this great tour.
