Product information "From Andermatt via SUSTEN-, GRIMSEL- and FURKA-Pass"

Startingpoint of this 72 mile long tour is Andermatt (4711 ft), which is situated at the entrance of the beautiful high valley of Ursern in the central Swiss Alps.

The first miles of this tour start with even stretches, before Wassen (3044.61 ft) is be reached after a short descent through the Schöllen Gorge.

Here the 11.18 mile long climb up to the Susten Pass (7297 ft) begins, which is often described as being the most beautiful Swiss pass.

A narrow gorge will be overcome via numerous bridges and tunnels, before - after a steady climb of 6.84 miles on an endless stretch with almost no curves - we will reach the village Färningen (5587 ft).

The upward sloping and endless seeming stretch continues till we finally pass the Sustli-House.

From here on an interesting section with beautiful serpentines begins, which leads us up to the pass.

The 16.8 mile long descent to Innertkirchen (2040ft) allows us to summon up strength for the next difficult climb to Grimsel Pass, which is situated at a height of 7103 ft.

The Grimsel Pass connects the cantons Berner Oberland in the north and Wallis in the south.

The 16 miles long climb starts in Innertkirchen and leads us up and up on a well built road in large curves through small villages into the wilde Aar valley.

The more we gather in height the wilder the landscape becomes: steep rocks to the left and right.

Passing several dams - of which the largest dams the Grimselsee - and after some serpentines we arrive at the Grimsel Pass with its small lake, the Totensee.

Riding 4.4 miles downhill through some curves; with a beautiful view of the opposite lying Furka Pass and of the Rôhne glacier, we reach the village Gletsch at 5771 ft above sea level.

In Gletsch the link road Brig-Sion-Lausanne meets the two passes Furka and Grimsel.

The 6.8 mile long climb to the Furka Pass begins right at the end of the village.

Via several serpentines we continually climb the slope and, after overcoming a very steep part, arrive at the hotel “Belvedere“ with its beautiful view.

After a few perspiration causing miles we reach the Furka Pass at 8.080 ft above sea level.

On the following down hill ride via Hospental (4898 ft) to Andermatt (4711 ft), which was our starting point, we can recover from the preceding stresses and strains.
