The Gaviapass (2.618 m/7854 ft), situated in the Italian National Park Stilfserjoch, connects Bormio (1.217m/3651ft) in the north with Ponte di Legno (1.258 m/3774 ft) in the south by a 43 km (~27 miles) long and partly very narrow road.
This seldomly traveled pass, at 1.404m (~4212ft) above sea level, is one of the nicest passes in the Lombardy.
We start in Bormio, riding along the Torrente Frodolfo through a scenically appealing stretch of road.
After a ride of about 13 km (~8 miles) and the completion of gradients of up to 12% we reach St. Catarina at 1.736m (~5208 miles) above sea level.
After St. Catarina we have to get down to business because the next 11 km (~7 miles) is very narrow and steep in the Serpentines and through a forest until Rifugio Berni (2.545 m/7635 ft).
A grass landscape, bestrewn with rocks, follows us along this ride towards the pass, which that offers a terrific view to the enormous Pta. S. Matteo which is 3.684 m (~11052 ft) high.
We complete the last 2 km to the Gavia Pass on a road which becomes increasingly level.
A 17km (~10,6 miles) long descent follows, which is in part very steep. It runs along a mostly narrow road via the Serpentines to Ponte di Legno (1.258 m/3774 ft).
Now we are cycling back, on the same way, via the Passo Gavia to Bormio.
