Product information "From Glurns via the Passo dello Stelvio to Bormio and back to Glurns"

Starting point of this strenuous tour is the little village of Glurns (907 m/2720 ft) in Vinschgau in South Tyrol.

We will drive the first miles on a relatively level route via Lichtenberg to Prad (915 m/2745miles).

In Prad we turn to the right into the valley of Solda and now we will follow the rising road to Gomagoi (1.256 m/3760 ft).

Here the North-East-Ramp really starts.

From here onwards the hairpin bends are numbered – there are 48 until the pass summit!!

Now the road leads out of the Solda Valley into the valley of the stream Trafoi.

The locality of Trafoi (1.543 m/4620 ft) is the last settlement before the pass summit

The landscape becomes more amd more spectacular, road follows the feet of the Ortler as it were (3.905 m/5700 ft), the highest mountain of South Tyrol.

After leaving the Trafoier Valley, we pass a sparse mountainscape with a beautiful view of the pass summit at 2.757m (8271 ft) above sea level.

This can already be seen from the Franzenshöhe (2.189 m/6567 ft). That means another sweaty 600 m (1800ft) are still to come.

However, these next 600 m are the most spectacular part of the whole pass!

After conquering the 1.852 m, we finally arrive at the pass and we can take a look at the beautiful glaciers of the Ortlermassiv.

Now, after 3.5 kilometres descent, we reach the divergence to the Umbrail-Pass (2.501 m/7503 ft) which is also the Italian – Swiss border and embedded in high mountains without vegetation.

However, we don´t turn and continue to ride straight ahead in southern direction on the almost 22 km (13,75 miles) long mountain pass. It is fitted with 39 hairpin turns and partly narrow and unlighted tunnels and leads us down to our milestone Bormio (1.217 m/3651 ft).

Now we are cycling back, on the same way, via the Passo dello Stelvio to Bormio.
