From Oetz via the Pillerhöhe to Kauns and Kaunertaler Glacier panorama road

Oetz in the Ötz Valley is the beautiful and promising starting point of this approx. 72 km long tour.

We start the ride on the road towards Imst, which is unfortunately very busy. After 2 km to Sautens on a low-traffic road we reach to Mairhof.

Here we take a left and after a few kilometres we arrive in the village of Wald.

Riding downhill, we cross the mountain stream Pitze at 736m above sea level finally going back up to Arzl in the Pitz Valley via sweat-inducing hairpin bends.

In Arzl we take a left on Pitztaler Strasse, which offers a beautiful view of the Pitztal Mountains and after surmounting several different elevations we arrive in Wenns.

In the village, follow a street sign with the inscription “Piller“

We keep on riding about 6 km on this road with its fantastic views through the beautiful meadows up to Piller.

We pass the nature monument “Piller Moor“ with its marsh nature trail and reach the road which continues to lead up to the world famous Piller Höhe with the Gacher Blick outlook which offers a terrific view of the Inn Valley below.

On the following few kilometers descent to Kauns, we are rewarded for our previous exertions with beautiful images of this wonderful mountain region.

Arriving down in Kaunertal at 1.002m above sea level, we follow this fantastic route with its moderate gradient and varied scenery until Feichten.

The famous Kaunertal panoramic glacier road of the Kaun valley actually begins after passing through the tollgate at the village border.

It is 27 km long and runs along the largest water supply dam of Western Austria - the 6 km long Gepatschstausee.

The challenging leg of the route begins at the end of the lake.

1000 m of elevation has to be overcome in the last 10 km.

Gradients of 13 % are reached constantly on the numerous hairpin bends.

The end point of the Kaun valley’s panoramic glacier road was in 1996 and 1999 the interim target of the Tour of Austria.

Reaching the target at 2.750 m above sea level after perspiration-causing 39 km, we are faced with the breath taking beauty of Weißsee- and Gepatschferner in the midst of a terrific mountainscape.
