From Sölden via Passo del Rombo to St. Leonhard and back

 We start our 104 km long bicycle tour in Sölden in Ötztal at 1,368 m above sea level.

On the well constructed road we drive to the village of Zwieselstein (1,470m).

On this stretch of road we have to overcome short ascents of 8%.

Shortly after Zwieselstein the road that now gets steeper turns to the left in the direction of Hochgurgl (2,154m) and the toll station (2,171m).
From the toll station to the Timmelsjoch (2,509m) there are approximately 12 km.

At first we ride on this well built road in the high mountains rapidly downhill.

Then there are long turns up to the Timmelsjoch.

The Timmelsjoch, Austria's highest border crossing, is the border between Austria and Italy since 1919 and connects the Ötztal with the Passeiertal.

From the Timmelsjoch we start our last 29 km in this fantastic high mountain landscape and ride many bends through tunnels at first quite steep, then later a little bit more flat downhill to our destination of St. Leonhard (688m) in the Passeiertal.

On our return journey from St. Leonhard (688m) over the Timmelsjoch to Sölden, the tour starts on the well constructed road up to Moos (1,007m) with more humane ascent grades, although 1821m of height gain is required for the pass.

But that changes significantly shortly before the place name sign and especially after the exit from the village.

We quickly gain height over the serpentines and ride through mixed forest, to Ganderberg at a height of 2,230m.

On arrival at the Schönau inn (1,716m) we see in front of us the frighteningly steep slope with endless power absorbing serpentines up to the Timmeljoch.

On arrival at the top of the pass, we are rewarded for all our efforts with a wonderful view over the Stubaier Alps, and on the 26km descent to Sölden we can relax from our exertions.
