The starting point of this 48 mile long demanding tour, with approximately 7220 ft in altitude, is the Passo Falzarego at 6946 ft above sea level in the South Tyrol Dolomites.
From the outset, and all the while during the 10m journey down to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the world renowned winter sports resort, we can enjoy the grandiose mountain world of the Dolomites.
Here begins the 20 mile long ascent via the Passo Tre Croci (5935 ft) to the Col Sant Angelo (5761 ft) at the Lago di Misurina.
Subsequently we make a short but sweet 4.5 mile detour up to the highest point of this tour, a parking place with the Rifugio Auronzo below the rock faces of the world famous three pinnacles (Tre Cime di Lavaredo), at 7709 ft above sea level.
On our way downhill to Col Sant Angelo we have a magnificent view of the Sesto Dolomites. Firstly we continue riding on the SP49, then, turn left at Schluderbach (4718ft) to the SS51 towards Cortina.
Just after Fiames (4200 ft) we turn right and reach Lago Ghedina (4790 ft) after overcoming average ascents of approximately 8 % on a narrow 1.2 mile long road through the forest.
We have to climb approximately 650 ft in altitude to our turning point at 5413 ft above sea level.
Enjoying a beautiful view into the Cortina d´Ampezzo valley and of the impressive peaks of the Dolomites, we ride rapidly down to the Dolomite road SR48, which we will follow after a right turn.
Another exhausting 787 ft in altitude have to be overcome in approximately 2.5 miles on this now ascending and winding road before we reach the junction for Caprile via the Passo di Giau.
