Col de la Madeleine - from La Chambre and La Lechere

The Col de la Madeleine is a 6539 ft high mountain pass, in the Savoie-region of the french Alps, which was very often on the route of the Tour de France.

The starting point of our demanding tour, comprising 57 miles in length and 10170 ft in altitude, is the village of La Chambre (1558 ft) in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Even in the village the road already begins to ascend noticeably and after passing the village Saint-Martin-Sur-La-Chambre (1614 ft) it continues steeply uphill in many bends.

After approximately 7,5 sweat-inducing miles we reach the ski resort of St.-François-de-Longchamps (5,413 ft).

With the summit always in view, the pass winds its way to the top of the hill.
Having arrived on the Col de la Madeleine, we are rewarded for the strenuous ascent (almost 12,5 miles) with a magnificent view of the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc (15781 ft) and the surrounding snow-covered peaks of the French Alps.

The following rapid descent to La Léchère (1348 ft) offers the opportunity to regain strength for the eventual return, which leads back via the Col de la Madeleine to our starting point at La Chambre.
