Danube Tour - Around Passau -

The world renowned City of Three Rivers, Passau, is the starting point of this 70 mile long tour through the hilly landscape of the southern Bavarian Forest.

Passau, with almost 50.000 inhabitants, is an urban municipality on the border with Austria, precisely at the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz.

We begin our demanding tour, during which 6591 feet in altitude have to be climbed, at the car park at the Jahn-sports field in Innstadt, a district of Passau, on the righthand side of the river Inn at 1030 ft above sea level.

Via the bridge of the river Inn and alongside St. Stephan’s Cathedral, the bishop´s seat in the diocese of Passau, we reach the city of Passau. Passing the anchored river cruise ships at the Fritz-Schäffer-promenade we cross the river Danube.

Turning right, after a few hundred metres we cross the Ilz and through a hairpin bend we ride in the opposite direction, northwards, until we come to the junction for “Veste Oberhaus“.

Via several bends, enjoying the beautiful view over the roofs of the City of Passau, we now ride steeply to the hamlet of Ries (1434 ft) and Tiefenbach in the Passau Oberland.

Enjoying a magnificent view, we ride on both main and side roads, over hilly terrain for the next 17 miles via the villages of Ruderting, Hutthurm and Büchlberg, which are all situated on hills, to Waldkirchen (1827 ft).

With more than 10.000 inhabitants Waldkirchen is the biggest and newest city in the Lower Bavarian administrative district of Freyung-Grafenau and one of the most eastern cities in Bavaria.

We will ride through the small villages of Erlauzwiesel, Wollaberg and Sonnen before we reach the highest point (2851 ft above sea level) of this tour near the hamlet of Krennerhäuser.

Now on a moderate stretch of road, we ride via Thurnreuth to Wildenranna, a district of  Wegscheid’s market and on to Ramesberg.

We now ride 1191 ft in altitude downhill through many hairpin bends into the Danube Valley, the starting point of this beautiful tour.
