Joshua Tree National Park

Enjoy a scenically attractive and demanding trip through the bizarre world of the semi-desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas where wild cactus and yucca decorate incredible rock formations.

The Joshua Tree National Park is one of the youngest National Parks in the USA. It is situated a few miles away from Palm Springs and extends northwards from here to the brink of the Mojave Desert. The whole National Park is situated on a "Mesa", a table mountain, which can be climbed via the smooth bends of a tributary valley. A wondrous, extensive steppe landscape spreads over the table mountain which is characterized by smooth hills, rock formations and wide valleys. With each hill and each bend the landscape seems to change dramatically. With each mile one comes closer to the goal the National Park becomes more spectacular and reveals more of its magnificence.

The National Park’s eponymous yuccas, also called Joshua trees, appear as strange abstract figures in the afternoon sun in front of the red-brown rock formations. The view in this area, with an average humidity of 8%, allows us an overview of a valley which is more than 124 miles long and to spot areas which are inaccessible to human beings. Alongside the road, the steppe landscape flaunts seemingly endless cactus fields, which then stop as abruptly as they began. In the middle of the smooth hills we suddenly find big lumps of beige-red sandstone, which look as if a giant has tried to build a sandcastle.

At the end of this tour we will be rewarded with terrific passages between rocks and joshua tree fields and the breath-taking play of the light of the setting sun, while the “mesa” road winds steeply downhill.
