Mount Whitney Portal

Between the western border of the Death Valley and the main ridge of the Rocky Mountains, an unadulterated piece of Wild West is situated, which might best become clear in the small village of Lone Pine. Here, the houses have just been provided with new signs. Apart from that, the heroes of cowboy times still seem to pass through the saloon door. Indeed the panorama, with view of the highest mountain of the USA, Mt. Whitney, has been backdrop for most of the American westerns. Thus, we follow in the footsteps of John Wayne and Co’s film crews up to the base of the mighty Mount Whitney.

This tour begins with a constant gradient and leads us directly to a canyon-like valley at the base of the mountain, from where - if one had climbed the countless S-bends - one could start trekking tours to the peak. This tour does not allow us a little breather. After we have left Lone Pine and have passed the fields of rock formations the glaciers have left behind, the road closely hugs the bottom of the highest of all American mountains.

Now the S-bends mercilessly wind to the top and quickly lead to dizzying heights. After reaching the highest point, the Mount Whitney Portal, our route leads downhill in the opposite direction, with views which are even more dramatic. Time to relax the muscles and to enjoy the incredible view of the valley with its salt lake and mountain chain situated behind it. Like an eagle landing, we approach our western city, Lone Pine, which we pass through at the crowning end of our tour.
