Bryce Canyon

This tour leads you onto the Colorado plateau, to a place where we are at 8858 ft above sea level. Due to erosion here the ground suddenly breaks up into wild formations. According to their discoverer after whom the park is named it is "is a damned good place to lose a cow". Bryce Canyon was not created by a river. Thus, it is not a canyon in the literal sense, as for example the Grand Canyon. Wind, water and ice eroded the edge of the plateau into big amphitheatres with bizarre rock spires - so-called Hoodoos. These rock spires reach a height of almost 197 ft. The amphitheatres created this way extend over a distance of more than 18.5 miles. The biggest amphitheatre is called Bryce Canyon, is almost 3 miles wide, 12 miles long and slopes downward from the plateau more than 787 ft.

Our tour starts right here on a slightly steep country lane immediately behind the Ebenezer Bryce ranch built in 1875. At that time the exciting rock formations a few hundred feet behind his house probably did not mean anything to him. We, however, experience them as a scenically outstanding tour. We follow the snake-like, winding road across the extensive steppe landscape, which seems to change abruptly behind the next hill. In this way, an interplay of steppe, rugged cliffs (which suddenly hug the road) and wide valleys with fields ending immediately at the next mountain range is created in the view of us.

The entire spectacle of nature is decorated with “Hoodoos” emerging again and again. One National Monument smoothly moves on into another and before we can say Jack Robinson we reach Grand Staircase, where we feel well entertained by the constant change between small ascents and beautiful descents.
