Product information "Altmühltal-Tour - From Eichstätt to Kehlheim"

The city lies on the river Altmühl and is regarded as the principal town of the Altmühl Valley.

Furthermore, it is the bishop´s seat in the diocese of Eichstätt and headquarters of the Catholic University, Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.

Many places of interest can be visited in and around Eichstätt such as the cathedral with Diocesan Museum, the former monastery “Notre Dame“, Williwald Castle with its Jura Museum and not forgetting the famous fossil quarries in Eichstätt/Blumenberg.

This approximately 53 mile long tour, comprising 4695 ft in altitude, initially leads along the river Altmühl on an almost even, low traffic road via the small villages of Walting and Isenbrunn to Gungolding (1243ft).

At this point the 3 mile long ascent to Pfahldorf (part of a commune of the Market Town of Kipfenberg on the Jura plateau, at 1657ft above sea level) begins.

For a short time we ride alongside the outskirts of the town then, following the signpost, turn off to Kipfenberg (1230ft), the pearl of the Altmühl Valley.

2000 years ago the Roman Limes (boundary wall), now a designated world heritage site, went right through the town centre.

Situated in the middle of the Altmühl Valley, Kipfenberg can claim to be the home of the first real Bavarian.

The sensational Germanic warrior grave of c. 430 A.D. led scientists, in 1990, to the origin of the “Bajuwaren” and thus today's Bavarians.

The presentation of this significant find and the full-scale re-enactment of the funeral are the main attraction of this new museum.

The medieval Castle Kipfenberg is well worth seeing. Unfortunately, however, it cannot be visited because it is private property.

In the vicinity of this castle, on the Kipfenberg – Gelbelsee road, a memorial stone – placed in 1980 - points to the geographical centre of Bavaria.

The tour continues to Kinding (1240ft), a health resort which is recognised by the Government.

Kinding lies at the confluence of the rivers Anlauter, Schwarzach and Altmühl.

Here, we soon leave the Altmüh-Valley and ride up to Haunstetten (1654ft) and then via Hirschberg (1624ft) downhill to Beilngries (1217ft m)

The city is situated in the Altmühl-Jura region and is the most northerly municipality of the administrative region of Upper Bavaria.

Here the Altmühl flows all along the southern outskirts of the city, the Sulz flows through the city and the Main-Danube canal runs to the north of the city.

After approximately 7 miles on a moderate stretch of road, we arrive at Mühlbach and the next ascent to Schweitkofen.

However, we do not stay very long on this plateau, because, two miles further on, we continue in a terrific descent to Gundlfing (1175ft) with its intermittent spring, an acknowledged natural monument and further towards the city of Riedenburg (1155ft) at the foot of the Rosenburg and the two castle ruins Rabenstein and Tachenstein, in the Lower Bavarian administrative district of Kehlheim.

We still have approx. 9miles to put behind us before we reach the destination of this tour, the district principal town Kehlheim at the mouth of the Altmühl into the Danube.
