The Market Town of Oberstdorf is situated in the administrative district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, both the most southerly municipality of Germany and the third largest in area in the Free State of Bavaria, after Munich (the provincial capital of Munich) and Lenggries.
The stretch of road first leads alongside the river Breitach via Tiefenbach (2792ft) to Obermaiselstein (2785ft).
Here we turn off to the road to the 4616ft high Riedbergpass, the highest pass in Germany which is accessible by car.
With inclines of between 8 % and 16 % the road curves upwards steeply for approximately 4 miles to the apex of the pass. On the pass is a signpost providing the wrong altitude reading „Passhöhe 1420 m ü.NN“ (Pass summit 4659ft above sea level).
The following 12 mile long descent via Balderschwang (3425 ft) down to Hittisau (2516 ft) in the Bregrenzerwald in the Austrian Vorarlberg is relaxing.
Constantly changing between ascents and descents, we continue the tour through this unique landscape to Oberstaufen (2592 ft) in the Upper Allgäu.
Short but brisk climbs and terrific descents await us on the next 19 miles to Niedersonthofen, the little village on the western bank of the lake of the same name.
Afterwards a beautiful view of this picturesque landscape accompanies us on a low traffic, moderate stretch of road to Ottacker and Burgberg in the Allgäu. A short detour through Sonthofen and we continue via Ofterschwang to Obermaiselstein.
Now it is not far to our starting point of this unforgettable, but demanding tour, Oberstdorf in the Allgäu.
